A Natural Reserve in a place to discover, get to know and enjoy.

«Riberas de Castronuño – Vega del Duero»; this is the Natural Reserve where the cellar of Barcolobo wines is located, in Finca La Rinconada. A unique place endowed with essential properties for the creation and maturation of our wine and that, in fact, provides particular nuances to our raw material.

What is the Natural Reserve like?

It is an environment of agricultural, livestock and hunting tradition, where flora and fauna coexist. A spectacular forest of white poplars, willows, pines and oaks through which species such as the purple heron or the marsh harrier -which are endangered-, as well as deer and wild boars roam.

A total of 189 species of birds, 24 mammals, 10 reptiles, 5 amphibians and 9 fish, which spend their daily lives on the banks of the Duero River, refuge and protection for all of them.

Natural Reserve Characteristics

Like any nature reserve, this is a semi-protected area, cared for by humans for conservation purposes, very important for the wildlife of these animal and plant species. A symbiosis of nature that has essential geological features for our wine.

SOIL. The soil is sandy and stony, pebbly, capable of collecting rainwater. This is important because it maintains humidity in times of drought and allows the vineyard to draw on this backwater during the most difficult times of the year.

CLIMATE: It is a continental climate with an Atlantic influence, characterized by cold winters and summers with very high temperatures. This results in higher quality grapes, since the vines have had to produce the fruit with important climate changes, and therefore, a great concentration of the grape is obtained.

GRAPES. Barcolobo has three different grape varieties: Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. All of them are obtained following different criteria of sustainability in viticulture, using ecological techniques. In fact, certain aggressive vineyard treatments that were previously quite efficient are no longer used.

We also have a fourth variety, Verdejo, with which we make our white wine. Unlike the previous three, this is an old goblet-trained vineyard, which requires some different techniques, especially in pruning and harvesting.
